Compare the written rules too. Packs, eligibility, timing, chargeback language, and actual deal mix can change pay.
Pay plan terms explainedPlain-English definitions and how each term changes your pay.
Gross and deal pay
- Front gross
- The dealership's gross profit on the vehicle itself. A front-gross percentage is applied after any plan-defined pack.
- Back gross
- Gross profit from finance, insurance, service contracts, and other products sold with the vehicle. A back-gross rate pays a percentage of that amount.
- Commissionable gross
- The portion of gross your plan actually allows commission on. Packs and exclusions can make it lower than the gross shown on the deal.
- Vehicle pack
- A fixed amount the dealership subtracts from gross before calculating percentage commission. A larger pack usually lowers your commission.
- Mini
- The minimum commission paid on a deal when the normal calculation would pay less. New, used, and EV deals can have different minis.
- Flat
- A fixed dollar amount per sold unit instead of, or in addition to, a percentage of gross.
- Commission cap
- The maximum commission the plan will pay on a single deal, even if the normal calculation is higher.
- Split
- The percentage of a deal's commission credited to you when the sale is shared. A 50% split means you receive half of the calculated commission.
Volume and eligibility
- Unit tier
- A pay rate or flat amount unlocked after reaching a sales threshold. The comparator applies the highest qualifying tier.
- Rolling qualification
- A threshold based on average monthly units across several months instead of only the current month.
- Lump-sum bonus
- One fixed bonus earned after reaching a unit milestone, such as $1,000 at 15 units.
- Retroactive per-unit bonus
- A bonus amount multiplied by every qualifying unit after the threshold is reached, not only units above the threshold.
- Eligibility condition
- A requirement such as CSI, product penetration, training, or vehicle activation that can unlock, reduce, or remove pay.
Other pay and deductions
- Base pay
- Hourly, weekly, or monthly pay provided separately from deal commissions and bonuses.
- Recoverable draw
- An advance against future commissions. It can increase current cash received but is generally repaid from later earned commission, so it is not added as earnings here.
- Training guarantee
- A temporary minimum monthly pay amount during an introductory period. The comparator adds only the amount needed to reach that guarantee.
- CSI
- Customer Satisfaction Index. Some plans tie a bonus, deduction, or commission eligibility to maintaining a required score.
- Chargeback
- Previously credited pay reversed because a product canceled, a deal unwound, or another plan-defined event occurred.
